Back to Philosophy of Teaching
a rationale for my teaching
“Content-to-Concept” - productive and emotionally valid engagement of students is necessary to enable myself and them to accept challenge, and take the journey from a ‘content’ driven curriculum to a ‘concept” driven one.
My desire is to find a way to enable more and more students to get past the "assimilate" or copying stage - get them to the point of understanding their own creativity so that they are making high quality innovative art that will stand them apart from their peers.
I want to offer students in the art classroom more than just lessons on technique, more than just the time to make things for the hell of it. I want to give them a grounding in why making art is important, how it can be of benefit and meaning to them.
The philosophy and history of art will be grounded in the Elements and Principles of Western art - Form, Line, Shape, Colour, Texture, Space, Tone & Emphasis, Balance, Harmony, variety, Movement, Rhythm, Proportion and Unity.
